SHISHINKAN
The Spirit of Japan, to the World
Japanese spiritual culture, shared through experience.
DRAFT / INTERNAL REVIEW
WHAT IS SHISHINKAN

About Shishinkan

Shishinkan is a community of practice, designed not as a place to teach Japanese spiritual culture, but as a place to feel and experience it. Rather than seminars or lectures, we invite you to sense, through all five senses, the culture rooted in Wa, Makoto, Kei, Do, and Toku.

Based in Tokyo, with gatherings also held in Kyoto.

Our Intent: Why Shishinkan

Shishinkan is a place that embodies the spiritual culture Japan has nurtured, and hands a harmonized society on to the world. We contribute to a society where people live not for self-interest but for others; not from ego, but from selflessness.

Not to teach, but to be together. Not to preach, but to let people experience and practice. Those who visit carry the spirit of Japan home within themselves, and quietly spread it in their own lands. Beyond that, we believe, lies peace in the world.

CONCEPT

The Five Spirits

Wa — Harmony
The wisdom of living together without conflict. Coexistence between people, with nature, and with what is different.
Makoto — Sincerity
To act with a true heart, without falsehood. The wellspring of trust, held dear by generations before us.
Kei — Reverence
Respect for the divine, for nature, for ancestors, and for one another. A spirit that begins with humility.
Do — The Way
In tea, in calligraphy, in the martial arts: the pursuit of mastery as the shaping of character, and as a way of life.
Toku — Virtue
A view of life that values who you are over what you achieve. A culture in which the virtuous are honored.

We do not over-explain. The heart of the experience is your own realization; Shishinkan is simply the vessel.
